What it is

Ikariam is Gameforge’s strategy game of island towns in an ancient, sun-bleached Mediterranean. Its lobby describes the job in one line: build and manage your cities, research new technologies, engage in trade, and go to war against other rulers when necessary. We like that wording because it is honest about the order — war is in there, but it comes after the economy.

You play in the browser, and Gameforge says it can be played on smartphones and tablets as well. The lobby shows a current client version, and the publisher has kept adding content: a gods-and-production update in 2023 and a construction update in 2025.

How a reign unfolds

Everything starts on your island. You build homes and public buildings, research technologies and train troops, and before long you are founding colonies on other islands, each run through a Governor’s Residence. The goods that drive the economy are wood, wine, marble, crystal and sulphur, alongside gold — and since a town rarely produces everything it needs, moving goods between towns is the heart of the game.

Ships do that work. Merchant ships carry cargo between towns, and a Dockyard — available once your Town Hall reaches level 35, or a colony’s Governor’s Residence level 10 — builds Freighters that haul far more, cargo only, no troops. Military ships and land forces cover the other side of the game, which Gameforge’s own blurb sums up as heading out to war with your fleet.

Recent updates added a mythological layer. A Gods’ Shrine lets a town honour one god at a time for a production boost — Pan for wood, Dionysus for wine, Hephaestus for sulphur and so on — and you may switch deity as often as you like. Daily tasks, eight a day across four categories, reset at 8 AM server time. The 2025 update brought Chronos’ Forge, which speeds up construction, but only in the town where it stands.

The clock it asks for

Of the six games here, Ikariam is the one whose rhythm feels most like running a trading house. Much of what you do is setting production, moving goods and starting long builds — tasks that suit a few short check-ins a day. Other rulers can still come for you, so defence is not optional, but the publisher’s own pitch puts war after trade, and so do the updates it has shipped recently.

Daily tasks reset each morning, server time, which gives the game a natural once-a-day pulse.

How it pays its way

Gameforge lists Ikariam as free to play. Its terms include separate conditions for buying digital products, so optional paid items exist, but the official pages we checked publish neither a price list nor a full description of them. Our advice: play your first weeks without spending, then look at the in-game shop with clear eyes and a budget in mind.

Who it suits

Raise this banner if…

  • you enjoy economies, supply chains and the satisfaction of a full warehouse;
  • you want war to be a tool rather than a constant;
  • an ancient-Mediterranean island setting appeals to you;
  • short daily sessions suit you better than long evenings.

Pass it by if…

  • you want frequent battles and fast conquest;
  • you rely on detailed official documentation — there is less of it than for the InnoGames titles;
  • you need to know exactly what the premium options cost before you start.

Strengths and faults

Strengths

  • Trade and shipping are genuinely central, not decoration.
  • A calmer pace than the real-time war games on this roll.
  • Still receiving new content in recent years.

Faults

  • Thin public documentation on the official pages.
  • Updates arrive at a slow pace.
  • Premium options are not described publicly in detail.
